During the jhoolan festivity celebration, the idol of baby Lord Krishna is plced on the swing and is rocked the whole day. A professional band of singers are hired and they sing devotional bhajans and songs. People are invited to participate in the kirtan and satsang (religious meeting or gathering). The center of attraction was the serving of the 56 kinds of dishes o the Lord at the end of the gathering. This ‘chappan bhog’ is then served to the devotees present there.
The evening witnesses the procession of Janmashtami jhankis or tableau. These jhankis are on the early life of the Krishna. Dolls and small boys and girls are turned into gods and goddesses. And they stand in these jhankis showing Lord Krishna, Balarama and Subhadra. In some parts of the state, people also enjoy the ‘dahi handi’ tradition associated with this festival. Some young boys make human pyramid and break the pot of milk or curd hung up high in the air.
