Janmashtami celebrations at home can be enjoyed with same level of devotion as in temples. Janmashtami is the day to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna. He was born on the eighth day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Sravana. It is said that this was the most auspicious day for the Lord to manifest himself in the human form and ascend on the earth. In fact, according to legends, it is believed that God chooses and selects the day and time to come on earth. So, let us together know and celebrate Janmashtami at home.

Lord Krishna is the most revered deity. All across the nation, people worship him in different forms. Lord Krishna, Lord Ayyappa, Lord Narayana and some other gods are different forms of Lord Vishnu. And hence, they are worshipped with equal zeal and dedication on the day of Janmashtami. Even at home, people keep idols of all these gods and offer prayers to them together.
For the Janmashtami celebrations at home, people begin the preparations early morning. Purchasing of different puja items like fruits, flowers, incense sticks, candles and diyas are purchase. They make the ‘prasada’ and sweets for the Lord at home. Some of the popular delicacies are kheer, pedha, murukku, singhare ki puri, gopalkala and many other items. These are first offered to Lord at midnight and then eaten by devotees or family members.
In the evening, people clean their ‘puja’ room and decorate it with flowers. They perform ‘abhishek’ of the Lord with milk and honey and dress him in yellow clothes that are decked with laces, stones and sequins. The entire evening, they sing ‘bhajans’ and songs in praise of the lord. During midnight, they perform puja and ‘aarti’ and round up the celebrations. Some of the members who keep daylong fast break it by eating the ‘prasada’ of Shri Krishna. So, we see that there is no less devotion in the worship of Lord at home. Janmashtami celebrations at home require faith in God and pure heart.
