Janmashtami recipe rounds the celebration. The performance of puja finds end in the offering of ‘bhog’ or delicious food items to the God. The celebration of Janmashtami commemorates the birth of the child God Krishna. Known as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami, the festival falls on Ashtami of Krishna Paksh i.e. the eighth day of a lunar fortnight. This year, it will probably fall on 3rd or 4th September. Generally, eight days after the festive occasion of Raksha Bandhan people observe Janmashtami. It comprises of two-day celebration. The first day is observed as Krishnashtami or Gokulashtami and the next day is called Kalashtami or more popularly Janmashtami.
On the day of Janmashtami, from the crack of the dawn the preparation for the day begins. People make luscious Janmashtami recipes for the day. Panditji with all the other relatives are invited for the midnight celebration. The puja is performed in the midnight as Bal Gopal was born at that time of the hour. Besides, women prepare some of the popular mithais for the festival too. All the sweets are made with milk, mewa, sugar and butter.



At midnight i.e. between the first and second day, people repeat the birth of Lord Krishna with zest and enthusiasm. Thereafter perform puja and sing aartis. Then the God is offered with these sweets and other delicacies that Krishna loved. Then, all the devotees together enjoy these sweet items. Indeed, the festival of Janmashtami is the day of feasting!
